This 4th we spent the holiday in our NEW house in Rock Hall! Over Memorial Day weekend we closed on a house of our own on Bayside Avenue, just a few blocks from The Sharps. Dave spent the first few weekends doing some work on it. The room that’s now Sophie’s needed a lot of work, so Dave spent two full weekends fixing it up, and it turned out really nice. He’ll slowly work his way through the rest of the house pulling up carpets, painting, and generally updating.

My family came up from Virginia and stayed until Monday, so it was a good long weekend.

The first night we walked across the street to the Harbor Shack (yes, we’re across the street from our favorite restaurant!), and while we were waiting for our table got some good family pics.

We spent a lot of time at the beach. The weather was really nice all weekend. The first day we had most of the beach to ourselves, but once the weekend got going it was packed. This is definitely the town if you’re looking for a small town 4th!

Rock Hall celebrates the 4th on the 3rd of July, with a parade in the morning and fireworks that evening. The parade goes down Main Street and is mostly fire trucks, local businesses, and people with cool cars driving down the street throwing candy. Very small and very Americana.

That afternoon the Sharp’s hosted a BBQ at their house. In addition to my family, Zoe and her daughter Maddie, Ed, Dot, Crystal, John and Bella were there too.

After dinner, everyone walked down the street to our house where we set out chairs at the end of the driveway and watched the fireworks, which they shot off right across the street in the harbor.

There was one unfortunate mishap during the weekend. At the BBQ Becky brought her dog Penny and Zoe brought her dog Mo and we had Petunia. They were happy dogs, running around like happy dogs do. I made the unfortunate and mistimed decision to get a picture of Sophie and Maddie on the swing set at the exact moment that Petunia was shooting across the yard. She nailed me with her head right in the knee and I went down. Hard. I’m writing this several days later, after x-rays and a CT scan have confirmed that I have a tibial plateau fracture that will require surgery to fix. Just a moment later, or an inch to one side and it would be a different outcome. But it’s done and there’s nothing I can do now (except curse the damn dog!).

Before hobbling back to a chair I did manage to snap the picture I wanted to get. May it live in infamy!

THE picture. I’ll remind both of these kids for the rest of their lives the story behind it!

Before my family left on Monday we had a little July birthday celebration for Mom, Becky and me. It was such a great weekend (with one low point), and I hope we can make it a tradition!

It’s been a while since we’ve gotten to visit with Zoe and see little Maddie, who is already 14 months! So we planned a quick outdoor visit this weekend to drop of Christmas presents, catch up, and meet her new chickens!

Maddie is in full toddler mode, moving around the yard and following Sophie and Lauren around. Zoe got the chickens a few months ago and they’re big enough for their own coop in the back. They’ve just started producing eggs. Of course, as soon as we left Sophie requested that we get chickens too. While it would be nice to just go out back to grab some eggs – I’m not sure Petunia would be so good about not eating them 😉

It was a quick visit, but so good to see them again! It’s been a tough year not seeing family as much, and especially knowing that we won’t see everyone at Christmas, which also makes these visits all the more special.

This year’s spring break was pretty low key, and it was also really nice. We did a tour of the Mid-Atlantic – visiting the Townsends in Maryland, staying a few days with my family in Virginia, and then ending the week in Rock Hall with the Sharps.

We stayed with the Townsends in their new house, which is beautiful. All three girls get along really well, but Bella and Lauren are especially close.

Then we hit the road down to Charlottesville where we stayed for a few days. The weather was mostly beautiful and we took full advantage spending a lot of time outside.

Ari and the girls also get along really well, especially Ari and Lauren who are only a year apart.

We spent the last few days of the week in Rock Hall, where the weather was beautiful and we were able to hit the beach one day, and where I also neglected to take any pictures.

And we ended the week off with Easter brunch at Torresdale with the Sharps, Zoe, and Elliott.

Two days after we got back from the Disney Cruise it was Easter.
The girls dying Easter eggs. They were interested for about 10 minutes, then I had to finish the eggs. They were beautiful 😉

That afternoon we spent at the Torresdale Golf Club for brunch and an Easter egg hunt. Here’s our mini clan (with sun in our eyes).

And here’s the whole clan: Zoe, her boyfriend Elliot and Elliot’s mom, Lydia, Dave, and Kathy. It was an absolutely beautiful day – the first of hopefully many to come in the next few weeks!

On June 28th Zoe turned 18! Her grandparents threw her a surprise party – and she was really surprised. It was at the Ocean City Yacht Club, and a whole slew of friends and family turned up to celebrate.

This year we spent Christmas Eve at our house with Mom Mom and Pop Pop. Dave made a fabulous dinner (2 fishes, as opposed to 7) and then we opened a few presents. I got a new camera, and so did Sophie! She did a lot of practicing…

This one was taken with mine…
A science kit! Dad was as excited as Sophie!
We then spent Christmas morning at home, just the 3 of us (well, with Benson, 4) and then headed to the Sharps for the day
All she asked Santa for Christmas was chocolate. Easy to please I guess.
Jumping for joy with her new doll
And a toy for Benson too
A doctor kit from Santa at Mom Mom and Pop Pop’s house.
 They were very good patients
With a butterfly net from her bug catching kit. She caught an ant later in the afternoon. Not much insect activity in Jersey in December.
 Having fun with Zoe
And ending the day with ice cream with Shannon. Goofballs.

Last week we took a big family vacation to St. John. We rented a house on the Cruz Bay side, on the boarder of the national park. It was an amazing week of good food, snorkeling, swimming, hiking, and generally just unwinding. Sophie loved the sun, sand, water and all of the attention from grandparents, her aunt and cousin.

Here’s a shot of the house from the driveway. It was made up of three separate buildings, with a pool separating two of them, and a courtyard separating the other two.

The whole crew on our last day (sigh).

This year we spent Christmas in New Jersey with the Sharps. We got to see a lot of family – and Sophie got a second round of presents (lucky baby!).

 Here we are Christmas morning

Sophie with her cousin Zoe (we really need to work on that smiling on demand thing…)

The day after Christmas Mayslanding, NJ got 18 inches of snow. We didn’t venture out in it, but rather gazed on from the warmth of the house.
