Maryland

The summer that we planned for in the beginning of the year is turning out a lot different than the summer we’re experiencing. Two of the three summer camps the kids were planning on attending have been cancelled and our August trip to Alaska has been cancelled. We did however plan to spend a week on the boat and decided that since we’re already working from home, why not extend time on the boat and work from there. So we spend the last three weeks on the Chesapeake. The first week we were at my in-laws house in Rock Hall, and then we hopped on the boat. The kids spent two straight weeks on the boat and then Dave and I and his parents traded on and off traveling with them.

We took the first leg from Rock Hall to Broad Creek, the Wye River and then to St. Michaels. The Sharps met us in St. Michaels and spent the next five days traveling down to Smith Island, Solomon Island and then to Crisfield, MD, where we met them for another switch.

The weather on our first day out was not ideal – rain and chilly – but fortunately that was the only day of bad weather we had.
Smith Island is known for their cake, which has multiple layers of cake and icing. It was a hit.

Over the next seven days we traveled a little further south to Tangier, Va., which is a small island off the coast of Virginia.

Tangier, Va.

It’s been a destination on Dave’s list for a while, and I’d actually never even heard of it, even though I grew up in Virginia! It was like no other place I’ve been in the US, and felt a lot like coming into a small Caribbean island. The marina hasn’t been well maintained, mostly because it’s run by a man named Mr. Parks, who has been running it for decades and is now 89. It’s unclear if there is a succession plan in place, but based on our experience, when Mr. Parks is no longer with us, I think the marina won’t be long for the island. But that might not make a difference because it’s projected that the island won’t be there for much longer anyway. It’s slowly sinking into the Chesapeake. It’s also beautiful.

There are about 450 people that live there full time, most of them professional crabbers. We were able to walk the full island and we saw 2 ice creams shops, 1 restaurant called Lorraine’s that had the best soft shell crab I’ve ever had, 2 churches, 1 K-12 school, 1 island history museum, and a heck of a lot of Trump supporters. Most everyone drives around in golf carts on the roads that still exist, and parts of the island that are no longer accessible via golf cart are accessible via boat. We brought our sea kayaks along with us and explored the island that way as well.

Lauren sitting on the front of the kayak I was paddling. It was so shallow here she could have just stood up and talked next to the boat.

A fellow sailor told us about a beach that we could walk to, which was about 1.5 miles from the marina. One day we walked there and fortunately on the next day we brought the girls razor scooters so they rode there – much less complaining 😉

After two days in Tangier we headed back north and over the next five days hit Lookout Point, Solomon’s Island, North Beach and Flat Island.

We anchored out the last night at Flat Island, but the other spots we docked at marinas. Most had pools which was nice because it was pretty hot and unfortunately in a few of the places there were sea nettles, which hurt terribly when they sting, so the kids couldn’t jump off the boat and swim.

The girls did a lot of fishing off the back of the boat, but only made one catch all week, which was unfortunately too small to eat. They were not deterred though.

Over the two weeks Sophie learned to crab from a fellow boater we met. She caught over a dozen crabs, but we didn’t end up keeping any. Lauren learned to dive and by the end of the week had almost perfect form. And I worked on my boat handling skills. The bar was pretty low there, but still, there was good improvement.

We made it back to Rock Hall for the 4th of July and the weather was just too nice, so we hopped back on the boat for a day of anchoring and swimming at our favorite spot, Swan Creek. The Sharps joined us and Dave brought his sunfish to sail around on.

It was just the long break we needed! At the end of the two week the girls 2 hit 10 ports of call and 273 nautical miles. Not too shabby!

On September 30th, Dave, our friend Don, and I all did the Waterman’s triathlon in Rock Hall, MD. This was my first tri ever. Dave had done a few in high school, and Don has been doing them the last several years. We all did the sprint distance, which was a 750M swim, 15 mile bike ride, and a 5K run.

Dave and I trained a bit over the summer, mostly running and biking. We both had gotten very few swims in. I was extremely nervous about it – he was totally chill. We were fortunate enough to have the most amazing weather possible.

The three of us before the start. I wore a full wetsuit because I really didn’t want to get cold. It was surprisingly easy to swim in and did the trick.

Here is Dave and Don’s group,  men 44 and under, before the swim start. I went with the last group, which was novice of all ages.  I hated going last because my only thought was that I was the last person on the course! Even though I really struggled on the swim, luckily I was still able to pass some people (though not many!).

Next up was the bike. No video of me, but below is one of Dave coming in from the bike to run transition. Bike is both Dave and my strongest leg, and we both did pretty well.

Last leg was the run. Transitioning from the bike to the run is a bit like running in jello, at least for the first quarter mile or so. I was very wobbly, but kicked it into high gear. So did Dave and Don (although I wasn’t there to witness it, apparently there was some close competition on the run between those two).

Below are videos of both of us coming over the finish line.

We all ended up doing really well!

Dave came in 54th overall man and 6th in his age group with a time of 1:27:27

Don came in 65th overall man and 7th in his age group with a time of 1:29:23.

I came in 36th overall woman and I WON the novice group with a time of 1:40:20.

With my first place trophy (a wooden boat wheel)!

It was so much fun. I think we definitely have another one in our future!

We just got back from a week vacation on the Sharp’s sailboat in the Chesapeake Bay. The timing weatherwise was not great, as the first part of the week was also the first heatwave of the season – but we made the most of it. Outside of the weather we had a great, very relaxing time.

On Sunday night we met the Sharps in Turners Creek, where we did a boat/car exchange. They had brought the boat from Rock Hall and they drove back that night in our car. We grilled on the boat, did a lot of swimming, and tried to stay cool. There was a nice breeze all night, so it wasn’t that bad.

You could easily spot us on the river, as we were the only boat with a giant inflatable flamingo and unicorn. The girls spent most of their times playing on these, especially on the very hot days.

The next day we headed over to Fairlee Creek, about a 4 hour motor away. We did some more swimming, seining for creatures, kayaking, and playing on the beach.

Here’s a shot of Sophie and Lauren in the kayak headed over to the beach. Soph is getting pretty good with the kayak.

Both he girls took turns steering the boat on the trip. Here’s Lauren with a little oversight from Dave.

The Sharps met us again and we made dinner over an open fire on the beach, which is pretty unusual because most places don’t allow fires on the beach.

Here are the girls cooking their dinners over the open flames… Sophie with her not so campfire easy tofu 😉

But soon the smoke got to be too much for the girls and the dads took over…

That night, after the Sharps left, the wind died and the bugs descended. It was a pretty rough night for all. Definitely the low point of the trip.

On Tuesday, July 3rd, we headed over to Rock Hall for their Independence Day celebration, which they do the day before. We watched fireworks from the front yard of the Sharp’s house.

The next morning, on the 4th, Dave and I ran in the Flat Five, a 5 mile race throughout Rock Hall. There are only about 50 people who do it, and Dave and I both placed in our age class (first time ever)! I won my class and he came in third.

Here we are with our coveted prizes: a coffee mug for me and a beer cozy for Dave.

That day there was a parade than ran through town and then Dave (pop pop) had a gig with the house band at the Harbor Shack. It was pretty cool to hear him play.

Here’s a video of the band:

We stayed for the first set, and then got back on the boat and motor/sailed 3 hours to Baltimore, where we docked and watched their 4th of July fireworks, which was pretty impressive.

On our way over to Baltimore we passed right by the buoy marketing the spot where Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner, which was pretty cool.

The next two days we spent in Baltimore. Dave and to work 1/2 days, so I took the kids around – to the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, and some shopping.

Lauren sitting on a “motorcycle” that was crafted from one piece of wood at Ripley’s, and the girls at the Inner Harbor.

We went to a famous dessert spot called Vaccaro’s where we got the biggest dessert I’ve ever seen. There was no way 4 of us could finish it.

It was called a snickers volcano.

On our last day we met the Townsend’s for lunch (who live just an hour away) before jumping back on the boat to Rock Hall.

In the middle of October we went for our last sail of the season. We met 3 other boats in the Chesapeake for the annual Beaven Raft Up, named after a sailor in the ULYC. The weather was gorgeous and it was just a beautiful weekend.
Me and the girls.

Sophie at the helm.

We had a fishing pole off the back of the boat on the way home and ended up catching this big Rockfish. We threw him back – after taking this glamour shot of course.

The girls have had a great summer – and it’s not over yet! In June they spent a week with Dave and the Sharps on the boat in the Chesapeake. They got to swim every day and explored haunts of Dave’s childhood.
The girls jumping off the side of the boat. At the beginning of the summer Lauren wouldn’t even swim in the water and by the end of the week she was jumping off the side of the boat. It was pretty amazing.

And then in July the girls came with me for a week to Ocean City for the Coughlin/Rainer annual summer vacation. Fresh off the boat (ha!), the girls were expert swimmers with no fear jumping into the water.

Unbelievably we’re almost half way through the summer. We’ve packed it with a lot of trips and friends and tried to enjoy every last second.

Over Memorial Day weekend we headed to The Sharps’ house in MD with friends John, Crystal & Bella and Pete, Leslie & Hudson.

Here’s he crew picking’ crabs.
And of course there was sailing. Here Sophie is helping John steer.
The first weekend in June we headed down to DC to meet John, Crystal and Bella again.

Here we are in front of the White House. This is as close as they would let us get. But we did see Obama come in on his helicopter, flanked with two others, and land on the lawn. He had just given the eulogy at Bo Biden’s funeral in Delaware.
Dave and Sophie also spent a week together on the boat sailing around Maryland with our friend Carl and his daughter Gianna.
Sophie and Gianna.
We’ve spent a lot of time down in Maryland. The Sharp’s house is only a 2 hour drive from our house, and Rock Hall is a town that the whole family loves. Lots of time on and in the water, bike riding, and of course crabs!
We have two kayaks down there, and Sophie loves to go out for a spin the bay.

The girls acting goofy on the beach.

Benson has been getting a little braver with the water. He’ll wade in about chest deep – but still prefers to sleep on a towel on the beach.

Dave and the girls.
Aleen also came for a long weekend visit. We went to Morris Arboretum which was in full bloom and beautiful.

And when we can’t make it to Maryland, there’s always the baby pool in the back yard. Hardly a substitute, but the girls love it anyway.
The girls and our neighbor Maya.

And we just got back from our annual 4th of July week in Ocean City, NJ. This year the extended family was there as part of the year long celebration of Nana’s 90th birthday.
All of the July birthdays: me (36), Maithili (30), Addison (16), Mom (60), Becky (33), Graeme (33), Vicki (51). And Lauren, who would not let me put her down.

Over Labor Day weekend we took our last long sail and went to Corsica River for the weekend. It couldn’t have been more beautiful. We anchored, jumped off the back of the boat, swam around and did some exploring. Sophie and Dave were in MD all week, and she swam every day, so by the weekend she had huge confidence in the water.

This has been a busy summer! We were out of town most weekends, fortunately for fun trips. Sophie was in all-day camp at Greene Towne School and Lauren spent the summer with her nanny Michelle and friend Julia. Here are just a few of the things we did.

We spent a weekend in MD with our friend the Marvin’s and the Spiegel’s. Six kids in the house! The kids spent the days tiring themselves out so that they vegged out with a movie at night.

Tubing in the Chesapeake (Liora, Claire, Sophie & Jeremy Spiegel)

At Sophie’s request we took a Philly Bus Tour around the city. It was actually a lot of fun and we all learned a little about our city.

The girls did some digging for treasure at Pirates and Wenches weekend in Rock Hall, MD. Here’s Sophie in her best pirate gear (arrr!).
The girls cruised around in their new princess car, compliments of Nana and Pappap, in Virginia. Sophie is the driver and Lauren rocks the passenger seat, working the radio.

And Sophie did a lot of swimming this summer. She took lessons at camp and also got in the water a lot in MD. She’s getting a lot more comfortable and will hopefully be a confident swimmer soon!

We spent Father’s Day this year down in Maryland with the Sharps. It was a beautiful weekend, just perfect weather, and we got to spend some good time at the beach.

The girls enjoyed time on the swing set… here they are with popsicles. What more could you want?

And another highlight of the weekend, for Dave especially, was getting his summer car back from the dealership, complete with a beautiful new paint job. The girls also enjoyed it.

This weekend we headed down to Maryland. We spent Friday night at the Sharp’s new house in Rock Hall, and then Dave had a regatta with the ULYC on Saturday in Oxford, and then we headed back to Rock Hall on Sunday for Mother’s Day. It was an absolutely beautiful weekend weather-wise and so nice to just relax with family.

Dave’s boat came in 2nd at the regatta and he also presented the awards that evening at a party and awards ceremony. This year Sophie was also his helper.

And the very best part of the weekend was my Mother’s Day present – a beach cruiser bike with an attachment for Sophie! We’ll keep it down at the house in MD. We rode around for a while this afternoon and it was so much fun. So looking forward to this summer!
