At the beginning of all of this I realized quickly that I needed to pick my battles, and one of the battles that I just wasn’t up for fighting was getting Sophie to brush her hair. She constantly needs to be reminded to brush her hair, and even then it doesn’t happen regularly. She has very thick hair that gets knotted easily, and if I try to brush it major drama ensues. So, after a week or so I just threw in the towel and stopped pestering her. And here’s what happened…

After about 3 weeks not brushing her hair.

It was bad. Really, it was beyond bad. Dreads had started to form. Attempting to brush it was out of the question. Cutting was the only option. It took several days to talking about it before Sophie agreed to let me do it. I wasn’t super comfortable, it was a lot of hair, but it had to be done. I watched a lot of home haircut YouTube videos first.

Here’s how it turned out. Not too bad if I do say so myself! Once it was all off of her head she was really happy. I think it felt really good.

And not to be left out, Lauren also wanted a cut. I took off a few inches, but was nervous to do too much more. She really wants it as short as Sophie’s, but I’m not confident that I could recreate that again.

Here’s Lauren’s new cut.

We’re all anxiously awaiting salons to open again so that mom doesn’t have to be the resident hairdresser for much longer. And honestly, no one wants them open more than me, as I’m starting to see just how gray I really am!

It’s mid-February and I’m officially done with winter. January felt like it was 147 days long. But we’ve been keeping busy trying to enjoy all of the fun things about winter (which I keep having to remind myself exist).

Dave has taken the girls skiing several times and we did a ski weekend with some friends in the Poconos. Both girls are getting pretty good and both really love it, which is great (Dave is in heaven). I’m still happily sitting inside with my book by the fire 😉

Here’s Sophie helping Lauren get her ski legs at Spring Mountain.

We also had to say good bye to our au pair, Lydia, who ended her year with us in January. It was so sad to see her go. The girls were pretty bummed, especially Sophie. But, just days later we welcomed Lina, our new au pair from Sweden who will be with us the entire year. The first two weeks were a tough transition for the kids, but I think we’re all settled in now.

Here’s Sophie and Lina

Philly has been consumed with Eagles fever. On February 4th they won the Super Bowl, the first time the team has ever won, beating the Patriots, who won the last five yeas. It’s pretty much the only thing people are talking about and the media is covering. Last week Philly had a celebratory parade, which was just nuts. The City pretty much shut down and hundreds of thousand of people came in to watch the team parade down Broad Street.

Here we are all wearing our Eagles gear. And a the best shot I could get of the parade. The city was just a sea of people and it was impossible to get close to Broad Street. People were climbing anything and everything they could to get a good view.

At the beginning of February Lauren decided that she wanted to get her hair cut again – very short this time. She loves it, and so do it – no brushing drama!

Here’s the cutie and her new ‘do.

I just keep reminding myself we’re just a few weeks away from spring break and the Bahamas!

I took the girls to get spring hair cuts a few weeks ago and Lauren decided that she was ready for a big cut – 10 inches! I was nervous and both the hairdresser and I asked multiple times if she was sure, but she was. And she LOVES her new hair! Walking back to the car from the salon she was asking random people on the street “don’t you like my new haircut?” A few weeks out she’s still happy with it – and so am I – so much easier to take care of!

Up until this point I’ve been cutting Sophie’s hair myself. We finally got the point where she needed a more professional touch. So last week I took her to the kids salon at Nest and she got a proper haircut. She also decided that she wanted to cut it short – to her shoulders. The hairdresser and I both asked her several times to make sure she was serious, and she said she was. So here’s the new do! It’s amazing how much older she looks.

I gave Sophie her first big haircut right after school started again. It was getting really ratty and unruly, so decided to take matters into my own hands. I cut about 3 inches off the back, and some bangs, and have to say, it turned out pretty well (thank goodness!).

She seems pretty happy with the results as well
Here’s a shot once it’s dry. With her BFF Claire of course 🙂

Well, it’s about that time. The tail had a good run, but to begin 2011 we decided that instead of being business in the front and a party in the back, we’d be business all the way around. Tail, you’ll be remembered fondly.
