Benson

On June 6th we lost our beloved Benson.

He was our first kid and the girls first dog. We were so fortunate to have had almost 14 years with him. When we got him from Philadelphia Animal Control, a horrendous organization that has since been closed, he was about 7 months old and pretty sick, but with the most loving heart you will ever know.

He made three house moves with us, and was my work companion for the first six months of Maven while we worked out of Rebecca’s house. He was our travel companion, tagging along on many the boat vacation and car trips up and down the east coast. In his younger days he was our hiking and trail running buddy, only straying from our side when he saw a squirrel. He loved people and had a healthy fear of small yappy dogs and cats, having no idea of his size and strength.

Both of our kids learned to crawl by trying to reach him and to walk by pulling themselves up on him. While he would give us the occasional side eye, he never once yelped, barked or tried to hurt them.

Both girls loved him, but it was clear that Lauren was really his true companion. She always wanted to know where he was, would wake him up if he was having a bad dream, would drape a blanket over him if he looked cold, and gave him endless snuggles, whether he really wanted them or not.

While the last months have been tough on everyone, quarantining allowed us to spend literally every day of his last three months with him.

We’re all still feeling sad and missing him so much, but our hearts are also full of great memories of the best dog there ever was.

On April 1 we celebrated Benson’s 14th birthday!

The girls made him some homemade treats, which he gobbled up. He’s slow these days, but still likes to go out for a walk most days, even if he can only make it a few houses before we need to turn back. He had his annual check up recently and the vet said that his heart still sounds good. His front legs give him some trouble, and lately he’s been losing his balance a bit, but overall, he’s a happy old man who has lived a good, long life 🙂

On April 1 we celebrated Benson’s 13th birthday! While he’s slowed down a bit in the last few months, he’s still got some spunk in him. He got a bone that made him do his new bone dance and a cake shaped cookie that he devoured.

The birthday boy!

The day after we got back from vacation was Easter. We made it very low key, with brunch at the UL Torresdale. Zoe and Elliott joined us as well.

The Easter crew.

It was chilly – so jackets went on right after this picture was taken. Where is spring?!

Easter was also Benson’s 12th birthday. Zoe and Elliott watched him while we were away, and they spoiled him with his own cake.

Here he is with his cousin, Merci from a few months ago.

Even though he’s getting up there, he’s still spry when he wants to be. Here’s a video of him with a new bone.

Over Labor Day weekend we took our last long sail and went to Corsica River for the weekend. It couldn’t have been more beautiful. We anchored, jumped off the back of the boat, swam around and did some exploring. Sophie and Dave were in MD all week, and she swam every day, so by the weekend she had huge confidence in the water.

Today marks Sophie’s last day at the Toddler House at Greene Towne School. It seems like only yesterday she started there, and now she’ll be among the “big kids” at the Primary School. She’s turned into such an amazing, smart and vivacious little kid over the last two years, and I know GTS had a big part in that. Here she is this morning getting ready for her last day (with trusty Benson by her side)!

Here are a few shots of her and the class from this year:

No matter how many new toys we give Sophie – her most favorite thing in the kitchen in Benson’s food & water (much to his dismay). She knows she’s not supposed to play with it, which makes it that much more tempting I guess. She was cracking herself up so much this time, I thought I’d record it before letting her know she was caught. You’ll see how thrilled Benson is about the whole thing. Video here.

Last week Sophie was finally able to sit on her own (at 5 1/2 months). Aside from standing (with assistance) it’s now her new favorite thing to do.

It also allows her to get very up close and personal with Benson. She still isn’t his favorite person, but they’re warming up to each other. It’s a start at least…

This weekend we spent Saturday in Long Beach Island – Dave had a regatta and I took Sophie to the beach (for a short time… it’s going to be easier when I have a little help). On Sunday, which was Father’s Day, we went sailing with the Sharps in Cape May. It was a gorgeous day for a sail!
Sophie enjoyed chilling on Mom mom’s lap for most of the day

Benson & Rudy also enjoyed laying out in the cockpit

I think Dave enjoyed his first Father’s Day thoroughly

And I got some quality time in with Mr. B.
