This year, instead of Ocean City, the Rainer Fam came to Rock Hall for the week. The end of the week also happened to be Pirates and Wenches weekend, which was a bonus I guess 😉
The Sharps were out of town that week, so Doug, Vicki and Nana sayed at their house, and everyone else stayed at ours.
It was a nice, pretty low key week. We did some days at the beach, some days at the pool, and some just hanging out at the house.
Sunset at Haven Harbor South
And we did most of the Pirates and Wenches festivities as well.

Claire Marvin, Sophie’s friend from preschool who moved to Hawaii in first grade came back to Philly for a visit this summer. We got together with them for a day in Philly, along with Rachel Cornejo, another preschool buddy who Sophie is still friends with. The girls had a blast catching up – even recreating a picture taken about 9 years ago.

My birthday was on a Friday this year and we spent it (big surprise) in Rock Hall. The kids had spent the previous week in Va. with my family and then drove up to spend the weekend with us.
On Friday night, Dave’s dad’s band, Unknown Legends, played at Waterman’s, so we all went there for dinner and to hear them. They’re pretty good and they even sang me happy birthday!
Afterward we went back to the house for some cake.
And we celebrated again the following night with the Townsends as well.
This birthday sure beat last year’s where I was 3 days post-surgery and laid up on the couch in the living room. It was a great weekend, filled with family and friends. What more could you want!
The girls and I headed down to Charlottesville to celebrate Becky’s 40th birthday on July 10th. We got a babysitter on Saturday and mom, Becky and I had a lovely spa day with facilas, massages, and mani/pedis. It was a day of pampering 🙂
On Sunday we went to King Family Vineyard, where they have polo matches during the summer on Sundays. A few of Becky’s friends came as well and we had a picnic dinner with wine from the Vineyard. It was an absoltuly beautiful evening – the perfect temperature and lot of friends and family celebrating.
I also had time to visit with some friends while I was down there. I met Samantha son, Abe, who is just stinking cute! He’s one of the happeist babies I’ve ever met. And we also visited with Sarah and Sophie and Lexi were reunited. Lexi has a bearded dragon, which Sophie fell immediatly in love with and didn’t put down the entire visit.

I headed back to Maryland on Monday evening, and the girls stayed for the rest of the week for Nana and Pappap summer camp. We all had lovely weeks 🙂
We spent the long 4th weekend in Rock Hall. Zoe and Maddie came down for a few days and the Townsends were there as well. We enjoyed all of our typical Rock Hall activities – sailing, rafting up, swimming and a BBQ. Bonus this year – there were no broken legs!
Lauren’s paddleboard, which was one of her Christmas presents this year, got a lot of good use!
We all gathered on our front lawn again for fireworks, which they put off on the 3rd of July.
And this year the girls got to particpate in the parade with their sailing school. They had a blast.
Amazingly, another school year has come to an end! The girls wrapped with some final activities before the summer break.
Sophie had her Philadelphia Girls Choir spring concert at Temple Performing Arts Center in June. It was their first concert without masks. It was great to see their smiling faces and really hear their singing voices again!

Sophie also went to her first school dance!! I can’t believe it either. She had a good time, but we heard about some girls drama too – I guess it wouldn’t be a middle school dance without it.

Sophie also did band again this year, continuing with percussion. This was the first in-person concert we got to see since they were either recorded and shared with families, or submitted via zoom over the last two years.
Lauren did Girls on the Run again this spring and their 5K was held at Montgomery County Community College. There were a ton of schools participating this time and many runners. We’re not sure how many, but one of the coaches told us it was over 1,000 girls. Dave was her running buddy again and they killed it. Lauren came in 10th out of the girls running! She loves it and we’re so happy about it.

We also attended our first Bat Mitzvah for Sophie’s preschool friend Rachel. The party was held at Germantown Cricket Club and there was a special candle lighting ceremony for all of her preschool friends, which was really sweet.

Dave and I got away one night for a night out with the college crew, most of whom we haven’t seen in a long time. It was a really great night!

And finally, at the end of June, Dave, Don and I did the Rock Hall sprint triathlon – my first since my leg injury. I hadn’t planned on doing it, but decided to just give it a go – I’ve been feeling good – and ended up taking 2nd in my age group! Booyah! Actually, I was totally suprised and super excited about it. I’ve spend the last 11 months doing so much PT, strength training and mobility – I felt like it really paid off. I’m really looking to training throughout the summer to compete in an Olympic Distance in the fall.
2nd place, baby! Oliver, Sophie, Lauren & Liam
The girls both had a great year, we all had a great spring, and we’re looking forward to this summer!
In June Aleen, Sallie and I got together for our annual girls weekend. The last time the three of us got together was in Florida in March of 2020, literally days before the world shut down. We decided to keep it easy and they came to Rock Hall for the weekend. It was a fun, relaxing weekend, like it always is. I love how we just pick up where we left off.
We lucked out with an absolutely beautiful weekend!
It’s finally here – the last day of school! The girls both had really good years.
Lauren loved her teacher, Ms. D’Orazio, and made some good friends including Naomi, Lyla and Noa. She learned to love reading this year – beginning with graphic novels and moving onto chapter books.
Sophie did a program called Evolve, which she didn’t love so much, but made some good friends including Jojo, Max, Alex and Droury. She honed her presentation skills and gave a final school presention on sailing (which Dave was very proud of).

The day after we got back from Arizona was Easter. We made it easy and just did brunch at the Union League – a new property they have called Liberty Hill. Zoe and Maddie joined us and we met the Devine’s there. There was an Easter egg hunt and a delicious brunch. It was really chilly – especially coming back from our week the desert. But great to get everyone together again!
On the second week of April we headed out to Arizona for spring break. We landed in Phoenix and then headed to Tucson, where Quinn is living. When we arrived and it was 96°, but a dry 96! Ha! We rented an Airbnb in a neighborhood called the Catalina Foothills with a pool. The house was beautiful – maybe the nicest Airbnb we’ve stayed in. And the neighborhood was also amazing. Very southwest looking houses surrounded by beautiful mountains.

On our first full day there, we did a two-hour horseback ride through the desert. We had a guide who led us and educated us about every possible cactus and plant in the desert. It was fun and very informative and our butts hurt for two days after.
After horseback riding we had lunch at a taco bar (the first of many) on the side of the road and then went to Segura National Park for a hike. It was beautiful and we were able to identify all of the cacti that we saw thanks to a guy that morning.

The next day we went to the Desert Museum, which is a museum all outside. They have all of the animals that live in the desert in their own enclosures so you can see them. We saw a mountain lion, javelinas, coyote, and a lot of different snakes and spiders, including an actual rattlesnake on a pathway that Sophie nearly stepped on. It was terrifying. It rattled its tail and slithered away quickly, thank goodness.

That afternoon we went to the colossal Cave, which is true to name, a huge cave that has not been fully explored yet. There had been electricity installed years ago, but a recent flood knocked it out, so we were given camping lanterns to walk around with.

The next day we left Tuscon and made a pit stop in Scottsdale where we met up with one of Dave’s former clients, Suzanna, who lives there. We rented bikes and explored the downtown. We of course had lunch at a taco bar (where else?) and then spent the afternoon at a beautiful botanical garden.
Ice cream stop! Bike riding through Scottsdale
The botanical garden had a glass exhibit, so throughout the gardens were these amazing glass sculptures. The weather was amazing the entire day and the gardens were beautiful. It was one of my favorites things we did during the trip.

That afternoon we left Scottsdale and drove to Pine, which was about a two hour drive. About half way through the drive we stopped seeing cactuses and started seeing pine trees. It was wild – like an entirely different state. We rented another Airbnb there that looked a lot like a ski lodge – a big A frame with huge windows looking out at the mountains. It was also much colder – down in the 30s at night. Quite a change.
Our house in Pine
The town of Pine was very small, with just a few restaurants, some shops and a grocery store. There were also Elk just walking around. When we stopped into the grocery store to grab some food to make dinner that night they were just hanging out in the parking lot. The grocery store clerk gave us an apple to feed them on the way out, so they definitely knew what they were doing.

The next day we did three hikes. The first was a little disappointing – not a lot to see, mostly flat surface, the the “lake” we were hiking to ended up being just a small pond. After that, we followed signs to another trail head and that hike was much better, through the woods but also very steep. There was a fair amount of complaining involved with this one – from one child in particular who will remain anonymous.
The girls and Dave on one of the morning hikes
After that hike we went to lunch at the Creekside tavern, which was a cute log cabin building situated along a creek and part of a campground.
After refueling, we headed to Tonto Natural Bridge State Park where we did a combo hike down to the water / rock scramble. It was one of the most challenging hikes I’ve ever done – and the kids loved it! As long as there are obstacles to traverse and decisions to be made about which direction to go – they’re all about it. It took us about an hour to get from the top to the bottom, and was totally worth it. The natural bridge was above us and the pool of water underneath was beautiful. It’s hard to capture in pictures the true experience.

We also saw some cool animals including Javelina, White-Nosed Coati and even a tarantula!
Javelinas
The next day we were up bright and early and headed to Sonoma, which was about 90 minutes away. It was very cool driving along and suddenly seeing the red rocks start to pop up in the landscape. They’re breathtaking. Once we got to the national park it was super crowded – and hard to find parking spot. But once we did, we looked at all of the red rocks and decided which one to climb. We decided to try Bell Rock, which looked challenging, but also like we could get pretty close to the top. Both were correct. The girls enjoyed it because there was a fair amount of rock scrambling. Once we made it pretty far up the views were just incredible. It’s hard to capture it in pictures.

We spent about 2 hours climbing and enjoying the views and then headed into the town of Sonoma for lunch. This was probably the least favorite part of our trip. It was incredibly touristy. We sat in so much traffic and it was hard to find a parking space. And after all of that, our lunch was mediocre. We did have some pretty excellent homemade ice-cream at a little bakery afterward, which made us feel a lot better 😉
That evening Quinn joined us again and we ate dinner at the house and all slept like logs.
The next morning we were up early and headed to the Grand Canyon, which was about 2 hours away. I drove with Quinn because she was going to leave directly from there, and the girls went with Dave in the truck.
Our first stop was Grand Canyon helicopter tours. It was just the five of us and a pilot and we went for an hour-long ride over the canyon. It was wild. They gave us headphones that played music to coincide with the trip, which was a nice touch. Again, something that’s really hard to capture in pictures.
That afternoon we parted ways with Quinn and headed back to Pine, where we had our last dinner at a little wood fired pizza restaurant that was delicious.
The next morning we packed up and headed back to Phoenix to fly out.
This was definitely one of my favorite vacations. It was a packed week and hard to believe we did it all in just one state. I also loved the opportunity to hang out with Quinn for almost the whole week. I’m already thinking about when we can get back there!
